Library Procedures: Circulation

example of a library card.

Library Cards

Students must present their current Durham Tech ID card at the circulation desk and complete a registration form. A barcode will be placed on the ID, making it a library card. Once a student's library card is activated, he or she will have borrowing privileges at all Durham Tech Library locations. As a Durham Tech student, you also have borrowing privileges at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and the University of North at Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) libraries with your student ID.

Public Patrons

Public patrons must present a photo ID at the circulation desk and complete a registration form. The library will create a public borrowing card with a barcode on the back. Non-Durham Tech students who are 16 or 17 years old may request a public user library card to have guest borrowing privileges by presenting a photo ID and submitting a Parent or Guardian Authorization Form.

Durham Tech's Libraries charge $1.00/day (up to $5.00) for overdue reserve material. No other late fees will be charged. If material is damaged or lost, a replacement fee will be charged to the patron.

Returning Materials

  • Items must be returned to the circulation desk or placed in the dropbox outside the library.
  • Items must be returned by the date stamped on the item's card/sticker.
  • Items borrowed from one Durham Tech library may be returned to the library at another College location.

Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary loan is a service offered to Durham Tech students, faculty, and staff. An interlibrary loan is a request from the library to another library for material that is not in our collection. You may request and interlibrary loan by taking one of the following steps:

  • Ask a library staff member to request the material for you.
  • Submit an online Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
  • Click on place hold on the right side of the screen viewing the item in the library catalog.

It may take up to five business days for the material to arrive at the Durham Tech Library. If the item is damaged or lost the patron is charged the replacement fee determined by the lending library.

Renewing Materials

Checked-out materials (excluding reserves) may be renewed once. Books overdue within seven (7) days may be renewed in person for another three (3) weeks. Books overdue by more than seven (7) days may not be renewed or rechecked out by the same patron for twenty-four (24) hours after being returned.

Materials may be renewed in person or online.

In person-Visit or call the circulation desk (919-536-7200 ex. 1631)

  1. On the library home page, click on Search Catalog under Research Tools.
  2. Click on My Account.
  3. Next, click on Renew My Materials, and type in the 14-digit library system barcode number found on the back of your student ID or library card leaving out any spaces (ex. 2902400000000). Leave the other fields blank. Your PIN is the last 4 digits of your student account number.
  4. Click on List Charged Items, and select the items to be renewed by clicking in the box beside the title. Remember, you may renew materials only once, and you may not renew online items that are overdue.
  5. Click Renew Selected Items. Materials will be renewed for an additional checkout period based on the date of your request. The original due date will not be extended, so renew close to your due date to get the most extra time.
