DALLE 2, StableDiffusion, Adobe Firefly, and the popular platform Midjourney are all examples of generative AI work or image synthesis. These are sometimes known as image-to-image, or text-to-image generators because users can submit text prompts to generate visual works or submit images for remixing.
What is Generative AI (gAI)?
Below is a gallery of example images (with the provided prompts that were used to create them) to showcase the wide range of styles and possibilities with this technology.
DALL·E 3 is a great example of the rapid evolution in Generative AI technology. Unlike with DALLE2, users can issue image prompts to ChatGPT directly itself, changing their prompts and the generated images on the fly. Notice the change in quality and composition in comparison to the DALLE2 versions.
Prompt: "Photo of Durham Tech Community College Students"
This is an example of images generated by the program Midjourney. Image generators typically offer the user several choices of generated images to "upscale" (make larger).
Prompt: "Photo of Durham Tech Community College Students"
Image generation platforms might look different, but the approach looks similar: a number of images generated that then give the user options to pick from.
Did you notice how different the generated images of people look in DALLE2 vs. Midjourney?
Prompt: "Durham Technical Community College drawn in Manga Style"
Image generation tools work off of prompts (text commands) that tell the program what the pixels being drawn into the image should resemble. Midjourney, like other image generation tools, has been trained on a variety of artistic styles that it can try and mimic, such as manga.
Prompt: "Photo of students studying at Durham Technical Community College"
This example uses the Adobe Firefly platform, which was trained on Adobe Stock images.
Prompt used: Cat fur (used with Adobe Firefly's text generation tool)
The image-generation space has quickly become extremely competitive with various platforms offering unique image-generation services, such as this example, which uses Adobe's Firefly text material tool. The words "Durham Tech Library" have been rendered with the texture of cat fur, but the example could have easily used balloons, paint, or other fun textures.
