What is literary criticism?

Literary criticism is the evaluation, analysis, description, or interpretation of works of literature. (Definition adapted from The Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory 3rd ed. by J.A. Cuddon) 

Criticism may examine a particular literary work or may look at an author's overall body of work.
