Students cannot apply separately for the keeper program, but will be considered if they--
1) indicate interest in the program on the Computer Assistant Request application or on a renewal form;
2) have borrowed a laptop for two or more semesters starting in Spring 2025 (the first semester of grant implementation);
3) while borrowing a laptop, (if curriculum) have met SAP with completion of 2/3 of their enrolled classes over two semesters, (if Con-Ed) have completed two longer term programs successfully over two terms, or (if CCR or ESL) have met program requirements set forward by program directors;
4) do not have any outstanding bills due to the Library;
and
5) have completed the Library's "Getting to Know Your Chromebook Tutorial" with a 50% or above. [The link to this tutorial will be sent to eligible users for the first distribution phase and then will be publicly available starting in Spring 2026.]
Eligible students will receive a free, new HP Fortis Chromebook with a 3 year comprehensive accident warranty, a laptop sleeve, and a USB drive.
Students in all programs of study are eligible, and there is not a minimum number of credit hours, though there may be a minimum time requirement for certain Con-Ed classes. Basic Skills students may have additional participation requirements to meet progression goals as set forth by their program directors. Dual-enrolled high school students may not be eligible and, if eligible, will require program and parent/guardian approval.
Students who are eligible for a keeper will be contacted when a Chromebook is available for pickup and will switch out their loaner for a keeper.
Students who receive a keeper laptop will not be eligible for a loaner Chromebook for two years except in extraordinary circumstances (re-eligiblity will be determined by appropriate library staff). The understanding is that, while others may have access to your computer with your permission, this is primarily intended to be the Durham Tech student's computer for their academic work while they are enrolled in classes.
Students are responsible for contacting HP regarding any warranty issues for their keeper Chromebook.

You can find the serial number for your keeper HP Fortis Chromebook on the bottom next to SN#. It contains a set of numbers and letters unique to your device.
